Individual Song Breakdowns

The previous song breakdowns apply. I’ll be using this space to discuss both segue pieces.

The Noctivagant Lark Arises (Segue 1)

This one is comprised of the chord progression from “Lollygag (Clown Nose)” and the melody from the C+D sections of “Buttery Follicles”. When the drums break in, there’s a featured, improvised solo, via the Otamatone (I recorded it on Halloween). The drums start out somewhat basic (samples from the Teenage Engineering PO-12), outlining a rhythmic motif, before delving into spazz-y chaos, then transitioning to ‘live’ drum-samples. The ending tempo of the final bar is the same as the tempo for ‘Lolly’. The title is an allusion to the inherent disparity of my current sleeping schedule.

The Man With the Furious Eyes (Segue 2)

This one is entirely programmed with samples from the following: the drum track for “Watchpork” (Redux version), the original bass, harpsichord, marimba, and piano tracks for “Watchpork”, and the bass and synth tracks—along with a small drum loop that I bounced out—for “Buttery Follicles”. Various effects and additional further processing was employed. At first, it was a little intimidating having so many tracks and so much ‘audio information’ to work with, but eventually I was able to coerce small pockets of music out of it, mostly by happenstance. It helped to have experience, having done similar experiments in “Susurrant Plangency” and “Rewilded” (Projects III and Fall and Response, respectively). The title is something that was said about my appearance in a Ukrainian restaurant.
